We arrived so early forgetting it was a Sunday, but there was a definite sea fresh feeling in the air and the faint smell and taste of salt in the air, it was pleasant. After the massive amount of wine and rough interrupted train sleep we had.
Venice seem very circuit like, everyone only goes 1 way even though there are off-shooting streets you go that way through town, not that way.
We had found a café that was open this early and had a nice coffee while we waited for everything else to open, we were very amused by the birds again just stealing peoples food mere inches from them and seconds after they finish or a crumb falls.
McDonalds finally open and we actually ate something there *shudders* it was very expensive and the wifi didn’t even work for us (this was the case throughout all of Italy, wifi did not work on any mobile device, we saw many people tapping phones, PDA’s, game consoles looking confused then shaking heads and walking away) we felt pretty rough and liked the shade today, Ljubljana was having it’s repeating effects on us.
Overall the ‘tourist tat’ was pretty good here, I especially liked the Venetian Masks they were pretty and looked of good quality.
Carrying on the same direction as the crowd we found a similar ritual happening on the rivers, a line of gondola’s as far as you could see, tip to tail end, it didn’t look relaxing more like a production line.
It’s a very impressive looking city and nearly everything is as it was built originally it was very pretty, and I totally felt like I was in Assassin’s Creed (no hay bails on corners though)
There was some very quirky gallery with some funny paintings of superheroes in very unsuper heroey or comical sexual situations and a statue of David carrying Ronald MacDonalds head, however no big bags were allowed in so we didn’t have a look around, but will look out for the book or more of this guys artwork.
We carried on walking around and found a more free moving area, that opened up to the sea. We walked on, crossed a bridge and dangled our feet in the sea canal, it was brilliant
It’s very small and we managed to walk around the city, take in the sights and walk around the music museum and back to the train station all in 7 hours. Especially as we were idle for a few hours at the start of the day.
On the way back to the station we found the cheap side! Found a bakery/café selling coffee for only €0.80 but aha I did not have coffee, instead I went the lunchy route and had some weird golden breadcrumb covered pasta/rice ball, stuffed with cheese and ham. It was very strange, I also bougt a a chocolate salami! It looked like a big slice of black pudding, however it is a big circular slab of Chocolate truffley stuff and biscuit pieces. I liked it
We got a train to Rome on a whim and were forced to pay €18 reservation fee, we were allocated seats, which had already been booked, and they had also had their reservations double booked.
Reservation fees suck, and Italy is full of them! Advice get them before you board, if possible you can save €8
