Zagreb is cool too

Initial thoughts when we arrived were wow nice city, I stupidly mixed the conversion rate up and withdrew £100 worth of Croatian money, whoops! As soon as we left we saw a big bunch of students who asked if we could take their picture for them, a hyperactive local girl thanked us and recommended we go to the Bacchus bar. Already getting a good vibe here but checking into the Hostel, Hobo Bear, was our priority (especially as the train was 15 minutes late) the website instructions said 15 minutes walk, we think more towards 25 with bags any traveller would have.

We checked in a little late locked our bags up and headed off for a beer in a bar we had passed, things were much quieter after 12 but we found a bar open and got 2 beers for about £4 these were the most expensive beers of our time here. After drinking we went to back to bed.

In the morning the Canadian girls we were sharing a room with were really helpful and nice (although a bit hungover) and gave us some maps and a great walking guide book.

We finished off a Budapest sandwich and a local beer, whilst checking out, planning our next journey and getting our boarding passes printed (for free, aww yeah hobo bear was cool). Finally we started our tour around the old town going to their local natural history museum, it was about £1.50 to enter and was quite poor, we weren’t expecting Austria standard but yeah, nearly all their animals were posed in threatening snarls even a mole!

Afterwards; we carried on our walk seeing the mosaic roof church, the stone gate and plenty of statues before going to a recommended restaurant which translates as ‘little bear’ they brew their own beers and serve good food, between us we basically ate their whole menu through having mixed grills and drank each of their beers. Total was about £15 I think… Very enjoyable. I highly recommend.

Phil has just reminded me that we also went to bloody bridge, but I had forgotten because there isn’t a bridge there now, just was in the past now it’s another street with bars/restaurants or something

We carried on to their market, which was closing up and on to the new town, looked around in some shops and the park then headed back to the hostel to collect bags, on the walk to the station we grabbed a random Ice Cream, it was good stuff.

We bumped into the same girl from last night, still as hyper who asked if we wen to Bacchus last night, we said no and she made a sad face and said we should go and disappeared.

We had a few hours to kill so finally headed to the jazz bar Bacchus that was recommended to us twice (by the same girl I know… but still) it was great little jazz bar with a garden and a nice cool underground cellar bar, which is where we sat, they had WiFi and we sat trying beers from the menu. We realised later on that the bar maid gave us 50% off our bill just for talking with her and making her less stressed which is awesome!
We also just got 2 beers bought for us by some random croatian guy, our total bill 26kn which at todays rate is £3.11 for 4 beers (excluding the 2 bought for us) we are going to slovenia tonight staying at Ljubljana at H2Ohostel next to Dragon Bridge, (they have statues of dragons and all sorts scattered around) it’s gonna be awesome!

We got on the train, Phil bought me a Top Gear style present, of a Croatian Comic Book ‘Zagor’ it looks old and not too bad but yeah can’t understand a word!

Sharing a carriage with a Spanish Woman, I bought a case of beer on board the Train and shared it amongst us as she told us about Ljubljana and Zagreb, she also praised Bacchus highly. Once again another journey made better by conversation with a stranger.
